How often do you look below the surface? It’s quite easy to see things for face value. It’s very simple to admire or criticize what lies on the surface. We go through life rarely questioning what is underneath. Underneath the beauty of something, or underneath the anger of someone. Kind of like a massive tree in the forest, we marvel at its beauty and pay little to no attention to its deep roots. The very reason for its height and strength. Strong roots will grow a strong a tree.
We often do this to ourselves in terms of what we want out of life. We only see whats on the surface, big homes, financial success, or other types of possessions. We often look at someone else’s success on the surface and fail to see the roots that may have got them there. This is how may of us view the things around us and then consider them our goals. I like to call these surface goals. They hold no real weight or any real meaning because they are just objects that you see on the surface. This type of approach is fruitless because it’s rooted in an object and not a purpose. When we set out to attain a specific item or even a status, we miss out on its purpose. Without purpose, those goals are no more than a mere day dream, a wish, or – a maybe someday idea. Real purpose drives real action, because it has roots. Where you lay down roots, you’ll grow.
So, next time you see yourself dreaming of some possession or general idea, ask yourself what would be its purpose. A big house or a place to grow a family. To be rich or to provide financial security for your children. To own a business or fulfill your own passions. With the right roots, with a look below the surface, you will find the purpose to your aspirations and the reasons why you will succeed. Success is in your purpose, not in your achievements.
